Enable Developer Mode

  1. Open Settings

  3. Select Developer Mode radio button

  5. Reboot

Add Linux Base Feature

  1. Open Control Panel

  3. Select Turn Windows features on or off
  4. Check box for Windows Subsystem for Linux
  5. Reboot

Install Linux Distro from Microsoft Store

I prefer Ubuntu out of the four distributions they had available when writing this. So, that's what I'll use in my example, but I'm sure you could use the other flavors in the same manner if you wish.

  1. Open Microsoft Store
  2. Search for Ubuntu
  3. Select the version you want
  4. Install
  5. Reboot

Create User

Then you'll need to create a default UNIX user account. This account doesn't have to be the same as your Windows account. For more information visit:

  1. Launch Ubuntu Shell
  2. Type <username>
  3. Enter password twice
  4. Done
