Install IntelliJ IDEA on Amazon Linux Workspace

This article gives the steps to Jetbrains IntelliJ IDEA on Amazon Linux 2 Workspace.

One Liner

Set version variable:

idea_version=2019.3 && \
wget${idea_version}.tar.gz -P $HOME/Downloads && \
mkdir -p $HOME/Applications/idea && \
tar -xzvf $HOME/Downloads/ideaIU-${idea_version}.tar.gz --strip-components 1 -C $HOME/Applications/idea

Download IntelliJ IDEA

  1. Download to $HOME/Downloads
    wget -P $HOME/Downloads

Create Destination Folder

Create a user home Applications folder

mkdir -p $HOME/Applications

Extract Archive

  1. mkdir -p $HOME/Applications/idea && tar -xzvf $HOME/Downloads/ideaIU-2019.3.tar.gz --strip-components 1 -C $HOME/Applications/idea


  1. mkdir -p $HOME/Applications/idea && find $HOME/Downloads -type f -name "ideaIU*.tar.gz" | xargs -I tar -xzvf {} --strip-components 1 -C $HOME/Applications/idea

Run IntelliJ IDEA

  1. $HOME/Applications/idea/bin/
  2. If applicable Import Settings | Enter License Key
  3. Select Yes create menu item
  4. Select Yes create CLI script /usr/local/bin/idea

In-Place Upgrade

To do an in-place upgrade of a minor release simply uncompress the archive into the $HOME/Applications/idea directory.

tar -xzvf $HOME/Downloads/ideaIU-2019.3.tar.gz --strip-components 1 -C $HOME/Applications/idea

Add to Path (Optional)

Add the $HOME/Applications/idea/bin to your PATH environmental variable so that you may start IntelliJ IDEA from any directory.


  1. Delete Application folder
    rm -rf $HOME/Applications/idea
  2. Delete run script
    rm -f /usr/local/bin/idea
